Tupton Coal, which appears thicker in the photograph owing to heaving by the shovel is being dug by power shovel and loaded into a lorry for transport by rail. On the right is the 25 ft. undisturbed face of mudstone. On the left is the overburden removed from above the coal now being worked. With a rock floor such as occupies the foreground digging can proceed in wet weather. |
