Description: Tavern Houses opencast site, about 1/4 m. S. of 'Bulls Head', Denby Common. Looking E. Opencast coal series. Topsoil stripping. Topsoil to a depth of 18 in. has been removed by tractor-scraper unit exposing the clay subsoil which overlies the coal seam. This stripping of topsoil and transference to a dump completes the first operation in opencast coal working.
