Description: Cock Beck opencast site, 600 yd. W. 50 degrees N. from site of Barnbow Hall. Opencast coal series. Topsoil stripping. The removal of topsoil is the first operation in opencast working. This is stacked separately and remains in a heap until the area is worked out. The photograph shows a tractor-drawn scraper loading topsoil for removal to the dump seen on the skyline behind the scraper. The light colour in the foreground is subsoil clay.
