Description: Aston Common opencast site, 400 yd. S. 38 degrees W. from Great Bridge. Looking S. Opencast coal series. Trial trench for coal sampling. At an early stage in the prospecting, a trench is dug to the seam and a channel section of the coal removed for chemical analysis. In the photograph the Foxearth seam has been exposed at the bottom of the machine-cut trench and pits are being dug through the coal by hand preparatory to sampling.
