Description: Park Cottage, 1 1/4 m. NW of Dalton-in-Furness Station. Looking W. Subsidence over sop of hematite, Park Mines. The extraction of hematite from the sop ore-bodies produces crater-like depressions at the surface. The one shown in the photograph is 1750 feet long, 800 feet wide and 200 feet deep and is over the largest sop in the district, the Park Sop. The old engine house on the left is at the Burlington Shaft.
