Description: | Granite scenery coast at Land's End. A view looking due east, showing Armed Knight rock (granite) in the middle distance and the Longships rocks and lighthouse beyond. The Longships consists of a group of rocks, composed of granite, on the landward side of the group and killas (Mylor Beds) on the seaward side. The lighthouse is built on a rock of killas. The spray on the right, between the Longships and the land, is caused by Kettle's Bottom rock (granite). Weathering and the action of the sea has played a significant role in forming the landscape of the area. After the hot granites were emplaced they cooled forming a network of joints. After considerable erosion the granites are now exposed to the air and preferential weathering by action of the rain, frost and vegetation along the joints has formed the current appearance. |
