Caption: Gravel working, Dunton Green, Kent.
Description: Gravel working in River Darent alluvium west of the main London road, Dunton Green. Looking north. Extensive workings are being carried out in the alluvial tracts of the Darent at Dunton Green. The gravel is about 8 to 10 feet thick and is under water. It is removed by excavators. It rests upon sand of the Folkestone Beds, some of which is also excavated. The rising ground beyond the excavator is the left bank of the river and is on Gault. The bungalow is on a terrace feature. The hill on the left is Pol Hill on the Chalk escarpment. The London Basin is not rich in economic minerals but is well supplied with the raw materials of the building industry and there is considerable output of bricks, cement, sand and gravel and road metal. The main sources of supply of the sand and gravel are the alluvial and glacial deposits that form terraces in the river valley.
