Description: Barnfield Pit, Milton Street, Swanscombe. Looking south-east. The Middle Gravel Series of the 100 ft. terrace of the Thames at Swanscombe, North Kent. This section is being dug systematically in search for bones of the human skull. Two bones have already been unearthed in gravel that lay nearer the observer than that now exposed. The bones lay far apart but undoubtedly belonged to the same skull for they are unrolled and fit together exactly. The floor of this pit is formed of loam 'the Lower Loam' and the skull bones were found at the level marked by the labels. They are Palaeolithic (Acheulean) in age. The superficial deposits of the London and Thames district have yielded the remains of Man in numerous places. They occur mostly in the river deposits. The art of making implements from stone is a product of evolution. The Palaeolithic implements are amongst the earliest.
