| Description: | Viewpoint, near Skellingthorpe, about 3 m. W. of Lincoln. Looking E. View of Witham Gap at Lincoln, from three miles distance. The Lincoln Cliff, the escarpment of the Lower Oolites, is seen on either side of the gap, crowned on the left (N.) by the city of Lincoln with the cathedral. In late-glacial times the gap was the course of the Trent - as proved by gravels continuous from the present Trent through, and eastward of, the gap. At this period the Witham breached the escarpment farther south. |
