| Description: | Hastings Cliffs. Looking NE. Cliffs of Ashdown Sand near Hastings. The Ashdown Sand forms impressive cliffs up to 300 ft. high between Hastings and Cliff End. In the distant cliff the alternation of hard massive sandstone beds with more fissile sandstones and silts (which are usually covered by talus) is clearly seen. The small bluff in the far distance right is a landslipped mass of sandstone. The shingle strand is, even here, composed largely of flints carried up-channel by the prevalent easterly longshore drift. See also A9926. |
