Description: Peak Alum Quarries, Ravenscar. Looking NW. The Peak Alum Quarries, Ravenscar. The section shows Alum Shale at the top of the Upper Lias, surmounted by the Dogger Sandstone and Estuarine Beds. Many huge excavations for Alum Shale occur near the coast, e.g. Saltarch and Kettleness, but the industry has long been extinct. The shale is now used for making red bricks.
