Description: Long Doodle, Filey Brigg. Looking NW. The Ball Bed, Long Doodle, Filey Brigg. This is a soft sandy bed in the Lower Calcareous Grit, containing hard siliceous balls. These are probably concretions, but have also been regarded as fossil sponges. When detached by erosion these balls are caused by the waves to bombard the hard grit beneath, and so form the 'baths' or pools in the Doodles. See upper corner of view, and A5476 and A5481.
