Caption: Philpots Wood, West Hoathly.
Description: Philpots Wood, West Hoathly. Subaerial undercutting of rock masses in the Tunbridge Wells Sand. Hard beds of sandstone crop out in various localities in the Weald, and are often strikingly undercut. In the Philpots Wood district a thin band of silty clay holds up water percolating through the mass of stone, and seepages of water are traceable for a considerable distance at this level. Partly by water action and partly by wind erosion on softened material, the rocks are undercut at this level.
