Description: | Foreshore, near Foulness, Hastings. Tilgate Stone varieties. Several varieties of calcareous sandstone, or siltstone from the basal Wadhurst Clay known generically as 'Tilgate Stone' occur as fallen blocks at the foot of the cliffs east of Hastings. The small ovoid boulder on which the hammer rests is a rare form in which calcite has recrystallized in 'spherulitic' aggregates leaving interstitial patches of sand. The larger mammillated block on the right is more typical, the rounded forms are due either to the original calcification limits, or alternatively to subsequent decalcification. The large block in the left foregound shows ripples and drifted shells on a bedding surface. |
