Description: Dunecroft Quarry, Portland. Looking N. Block of Roach Stone, Portland Beds. 'Roach', a shelly limestone from which much, or all, of the shelly material has been dissolved, leaving cavities in the stone, occurs generally at the top of the Portland Limestone. It is removed in blocks up to 15 tons in weight, as a waste product, before building stone is obtained.
