Description: Inmosthay Quarry, Easton, Portland. Looking W. Pitted' block of Portland Stone prior to excavation from quarry. In order to remove a block of stone from the quarry face, shallow grooves or 'pits' are cut vertically and horizontally. By means of wedges and scales blocks are separated and removed. In the present instance the upper part of the block, above the horizontal pit, is Roach Stone and is waste material.
