Description: Suckthumb Quarry, Portland. Looking W. Removing 'top rubble' (Purbeck Beds) overlying Portland Stone. At the Suckthumb Quarries a thickness of 60 ft. of Purbeck Beds has to be removed before the Portland Beds are reached. These beds consist of a softer series, the top rubble removed by pick and shovel, and a harder, the Limestone 'Caps', removed by blasting.
