Description: | Lane Head Quarry was one of many quarries in the Shepley area working the blue-grey, fine-grained, sandstones of the Carboniferous Greenmoor Rock for building stone used in the Glossop-Holmfirth area. The extensive working face of the quarry gives some indication of its former importance locally. The sandstone was raised in large blocks to produce block stone, sills, mullions and setts. The more thinly-bedded units were worked for flagstones and monument slabs. The Greenmoor Rock is a particularly important souce of building stone in the Shepley area. It was described by one writer as 'perhaps the most beautiful and valuable stone of the Yorkshire Coal Measures'. |
