Description: Martin's Pit, 1/4 m. S. by E. of Merstham Nurseries, Merstham. Looking NE. Folkestone Beds and brickearth. False-bedded yellow sand of the Folkestone Beds, overlain by about 10 ft. of brickearth. The Folkestone Beds are waterlogged, the water-table coming about 20 ft. below surface, as seen in the pit. The sand is pumped from the pit by centrifugal pump in the floating dredge and conveyed by pipeline to de-watering bins seen on the left of the picture, the water returning to the pit. The excavation is in the vale of Holmsdale, the hills in the distance being the Chalk escarpment of the North Downs.
