Description: | Holme Moss, 100 yd. on Yorkshire side of Cheshire boundary. Looking N. Peat hags. The peat on the summit of the moors, composed mainly of cotton grass is everywhere retreating: it is 8 to 10 ft. thick: in foreground it has been cut through, originally by the head waters of a stream: the channels have been widened by wind erosion, the peat being blown away when disintegrated in dry weather, leaving isolated hags. |
