Description: | Kilnsey Crag, Wharfedale. About 60 m. of Carboniferous (Dinantian) Limestone are exposed in this section. The basal 8 m. consist of dark grey muddy limestones with Arundian faunas and interbedded thin mudstones, and form the strong undercut at the base of the crag. The remaining limestones are well-bedded, medium grey in the basal 30 m. and pale grey above. Glacial drift is banked up against the base of the section almost covering the most deeply undercut part. Small springs issuing from the basal mudstones have cut through the drift exposing a few more metres of strata, as in the right-hand, wooded, part of the photograph. |
