Caption: Black Scar, Penhill. Looking SW.
Description: Black Scar, Penhill. Looking SW. Prominent in the middle ground are adits and open-cuts for roofing tiles in beds of the Grassington Grit Group, here mainly mudstones. Black Scar is a landslip scar in Nidderdale Shales with a few thin bands of sandstone. The cliff line close to the summit of Black Scar is in Red Scar of the Arnsbergian, E2. The feature demarcating the eastern edge of the landslip debris runs from the left-hand end of Black Scar towards the right end of the line of dumps.
