Caption: Les Vardes, St. Sampson, Guernsey, Channel Islands. Looking SE.
Description: The 30 m. beach in Les Vardes quarry. The photograph shows the well-rounded gravel of the 30 m. raised beach resting on very rotted granodiorite. Much of the beach gravel is also rotted, especially the larger blocks (right and centre), and the smaller cobbles show the effects of frost splitting (top left). The matrix of the beach is a coarse sand and the whole deposit is cemented by iron. The beach deposit is covered by a small thickness of made ground.
