Description: Scoat Tarn, Wasdale. Epiclastic volcanogenic sediments. This photograph illustrates a small part of a 15-20 m. thick sedimentary sequence. Here the sediments have a very variable grain size from silt and sand through to lapilli, some 'lapilli' have a long axis of c. 10 cm, making them 'pebble' grade. The coarse-grained layers tend to be only weakly-bedded and moderately to poorly sorted whereas the fine-grained layers are more strongly bedded and well sorted. Individual beds thicken and thin over a small area - e.g. centre left of photograph. Cross-bedding and channelling are evidence that the sediments are at least, in part reworked volcanic, mainly andesitic, detritus.
