Description: Burlington Slate Limited, Kirkby in Furness, Cumbria. Debris-flow conglomerate and dewatering structures in the Tilberthwaite Formation. This cut slab of volcaniclastic rocks from Broughton Moor Quarry (SD 253 945) shows a 0.1-0.2 m. bed of debris-flow conglomerate in ripple cross-laminated fine-grained volcaniclastic sandstones with interbedded mudstone laminae. The parallel laminated silty sandstones, above the conglomerate, are succeeded by a bed of silty sandstone with abundant dish structures that formed when dewatering occurred. Originally this unit must have comprised parallel laminated sandstone with siltstone partings; subsequent loading caused dewatering and produced the concave-up dishes of paler siltstone separated by pillars of darker sandstone. Burlington Slate Limited are thanked for their assistance in obtaining this photograph.
