Description: | Oblique aerial view of the River Isla, 1 m. west of Coupar Angus, Angus. Meanders and old cut-off meander in the River Isla. The farm on the lower right of the photograph is East Banchory. The A894 skirts the top of the meander. Here in the lower courses of the river, the river channel flows in loops called meanders on the floodplain alluvium. Just above the main meander in the top centre of the photograph is a former meander that has been cut off and subsequently dried out, its curved shape can be partially picked out by the curved pattern in the woods. The river would have flowed round this meander until the loops joined at the present bend (top left) in the river. Other features of note are the curved meander scars seen inside the lower meander that show periodic positions of an advancing meander. The river also is bounded by levees, though how much is natural and how much is artificially built up is difficult to determine. |
