Description: | View north looking towards Grantown-on-Spey from Cairngorm down Stra Nethy. Top Stations of Cairngorm Chair Lift in the foreground. Creagan Gorm, Craiggowrie, Meall a' Bhuachaille and Stac na h-Iolaire in the middle ground. The high plateau areas of the Cairngorm Mountains are designated as sub-arctic tundra. The ground is stony with very little vegetation. The underlying rocks are granite intruded as a pluton about 400 million years ago in the roots of the ancient Caledonian mountain system formed during the Caledonian Orogeny. It is classed as a post-tectonic granite i.e. it was intruded after the main phase of tectonic activity. |
