Description: | Edinburgh Castle panorama from Princes Street, looking south-west. Edinburgh Castle sits on a dolerite plug filling a Lower Carboniferous volcanic vent. The dolerite cliffs have been plucked clean by an ice sheet flowing west to east. It forms a 'crag and tail' feature - the tail is the Royal Mile to the left. Hollow formerly filled by artificial loch (North Loch), in glacially gouged hollow, infilled with 30 m.+ of superficial deposits. The sunlit slopes in centre are site of landslip. |
