Description: View looking north-eastwards from the north-west shore of Loch Etive near Craig, across the glacially enhanced valley of Loch Etive to Ben Starav with Ben Alder in the far distance, Argyllshire. This provides a view through one of the Etive plutons, one of the finest examples of a multiple pulse intrusion within the Caledonian Igneous Terrane. This body represents one of the youngest members of the Caledonian Argyll Suite of intrusions (at c. 400 million years) emplaced at shallow sub-volcanic levels within the crust (c. 3 km. depth). The foreground lies within the outer multiphase monzodiorites of the Cruachan facies of the pluton, through to the later monzogranites of the Starav facies. Although the rocks of Ben Starav represent some of the most evolved rocks within the pluton, their chemistries are such to suggest that the two main pluton facies derive from different magma sources.
