Description: View looking north from approximately above Achtriochtan, Glen Coe, Lochaber. The Glen Coe Lower Old Red Sandstone age (Lower Devonian) lavas. View looking north from approximately above Achtriochtan at the prominent face of Aonach Eagach. The rock face comprises a thick succession of Devonian lavas with bedding flows clearly seen, dipping to the south-east. The majority of the lava pile is made up of andesites, but the lighter prominent peaks of the right-hand side are due to interbedded rhyolite lava capping the andesite pile. These lavas in Glen Coe are preserved in a cauldron subsidence, a sunken volcanic area i.e. a downfaulted block within an eliptical ring fracture.
