Description: Oblique aerial view of the River Clyde, looking north from near Eastfield, Pettinain, Lanark. River meanders. River Clyde meandering across an alluvial flat; meanders show characteristic erosion on the outer curve and deposition on the inner. Many abandoned channels are visible, one of which contains an oxbow lake. The latter is formed when loops of a meander intersect so the river is then diverted through a short cut-off channel, the abandoned meander then forms the oxbow lake; it will eventually silt up and dry out. It will still be clear that it was a former channel as it will form a distinct depression and will have vegetation contrasting with that of the surroundings. In the middle distance the river cuts into fluvioglacial deposits which margin the valley, forming a river cliff.
