| Description: | Oblique aerial view of Edinburgh Castle from the south. A classic example of crag and tail featuring. The Castle is built on a basaltic plug of Lower Carboniferous age intruded into Cementstone Group (Dinantian) strata. The Castle Hill, together with the Lawnmarket and the High Street to the east, form a classic example of crag and tail featuring. The ice sheets during the last glaciation moved from west to east, they impinged onto the hard resistant west face of the basaltic plug at the Castle, the ice was deflected to the north and the south to create the valleys now occupied by Princes Street Gardens and the Grassmarket and Cowgate. The 'tail' is composed of sediments and was protected from the erosive force of the ice by the plug. |
