Description: Dalmigavie Lodge, Strathdearn. View looking south-south-west along Strathdearn showing an upstream section of the River Findhorn. The valley here is controlled by the line of the Silurian-Devonian age Findhorn Fault. Bedrock exposed on the eastern flank of the valley comprises metasedimentary rocks of the Elrick Formation, one of the lower Formations within the Precambrian (c. 900 million year old, Ma) Grampian Group (Moine) of the Central Highland block, south-east of the Great Glen Fault. The formation comprises interbedded psammite and semipelite with abundant pods of calc-silicate rock and minor quartzite. These rocks are hornfelsed in the metamorphic aureole of the Silurian age (c. 425 million year old, Ma) Findhorn Pluton, which here is seen in outcrop along the northwestern flank of the valley (right hand side). This intrusion is dominated by a biotite granodiorite facies, with minor diorite and hornblende-biotite granodiorite. Emplacement of the pluton was controlled by the fault system, and the lithologies within the intrusion preserve evidence of syn-emplacement deformation. The valley here was formed during the Main Late Devensian glaciation (18000 befor present, BP). The valley sides are draped by glacail deposits, with till exposed in the scar seen in the centre, middle distance. These are generally soliflucted, and commonly overlain by periglacial deposits such as head and scree. The River Findhorn occupies part of a broad, falt valley bottom. Several older terraces can be seen in the middle of the view.
