Description: | Oblique aerial view of Ben Macdui and Carn a' Mhaim, Cairngorms, Perthshire. Looking north across the glacial breach of the Lairig Ghru towards the plateau surface of Ben Macdui. This typical landscape of rounded pre-glacial plateau surfaces cut by deep glacial troughs, breaches, corries etc. is now thought to have been formed by a relatively thin cover of ice on the Cairngorm plateau effecting minimal erosion while the thicker, faster-flowing outlet glaciers forming during slightly warmer regimes were a much more powerful erosive force and hence cut deeply into the plateau surfaces and often along pre-existing i.e. pre-glacial valleys. |
