Description: | Oblique aerial view of Dee and Balmoral Castle, Aberdeenshire. The royal residence of Balmoral Castle is situated on the south side of the River Dee, approximately 11 km. west of Ballater. The castle is built of grey Lochnagar L2 granite derived mainly from a quarry 2-3 km. to the south-west, but possibly includes some stone from the Inver quarry between Balmoral and Braemar. The flat ground on which the castle sits is composed of alluvium which in turn rests on dioritic rocks of the Abergeldie Complex. The area in the right foreground comprises hummocky morainic drift sitting on Appin Group Dalradian rocks. |
