Description: | Oblique aerial view of Ballater from the south-east, Aberdeenshire. View from above Craig Coillich over Ballater and up Glen Gairn. Ballater is situated on alluvial flats in the inside of a large meander in the River Dee. Slightly higher gravel terraces occur on the opposite side of the river above the golf course. The maturity of the Dee Valley contrasts with the more juvenile valley of the River Gairn which is one of the major tributaries of the Dee. The Ballater Granite is well exposed on Craigendarroch (Hill of the Oaks) behind Ballater. The rolling hills beyond comprise Dalradian metasedimentary and metabasic rocks intruded by the highly evolved Coilacriech Granite. Ben Avon, at the eastern extremity of the Cairngorm Granite is just visible in the top left-hand corner. |
