Description: Oblique aerial view of Ballater from the south, Aberdeenshire. Relationship between geology, topography and vegetation. The photograph was taken above Glen Muick just east of Birkhall and looks north over Ballater to the grassy slopes of Morven. The foreground is underlain by gneisses and metavolcanic rocks of the Queen's Hill Gneiss Formation. Contact with the Ballater Granite runs across the view parallel with Dee and passes immediately in front of House of Glen Muick on the right. The granite is well exposed on Craigendarroch, the small rounded hill overlooking Ballater and on the forested slopes beyond. Contact with the roofing Dalradian rocks passes to the left of the television transmitter and then round the northern side of the prominent brown ridge (Crannich Hill). The change to magnesium and calcium-rich serpentinite on Morven gives rise to marked changes in vegetation.
