Description: | Oblique aerial view of Ballater from the south-west, Aberdeenshire. View north-eastwards from above Glen Muick to Ballater and the Dee Valley with the royal residence of Birkhall in the immediate centre foreground. The broad open nature, gentle slopes and meandering river course emphasize the maturity of the Dee Valley. Entensive alluvial flats which probably also include glaciofluvial terraces carpet the valley floor. Loch Kinnord in the distance occupies a large glacial depression. Bedrock comprises Dalradian gneisses and ultramafic rocks in the foreground and granite of the Ballater intrusion beyond, the faulted contact running parallel to the Dee immediately in front of Ballater. |
