Description: | Oblique aerial view of The Coyles of Muick, Aberdeenshire. View north-eastwards from Craig Megen across the Glen Girnock-Glen Muick watershed towards Ballater. The Coyles of Muick are composed of serpentinite and other ultramafic rocks and in the photograph are readily distinguished from the surrounding Dalradian schist and gneiss by craggy weathering and an absence of heather. Their height (605 m.) and verdant appearance make them a prominent local landmark. This serpentinized ultrabasic intrusion was formed during the Caledonian Orogeny and represents the southerly continuation of a zone of tectonically emplaced ultramafic bodies. A smaller but similarly verdant occurrence of serpentinite forming Craig of Loinmure is visible above the trees beyond the Coyles. |
