| Description: | At 1155 m. Lochnagar is the highest point and a prominent landmark in upper Deeside. The central feature of the view is the spectacular north-east facing corrie whose backwall is over 360 m. high. The corrie lochan is clearly seen beyond the northern shoulder of Meikle Pap, and the 1040 m. plateau area to the west is plainly visible in the background. Lochnagar is entirely in granite, a post-tectonic (Caledonian Orogeny) granite dated at c. 415 Ma. Much of the area in view is composed of the grey and pink leucogranite which dominates the central part of the complex, but in the area of the corrie this is cut by an extensive body of microgranite. High-level corrie, corrie lochan and high level erosion surface. The photograph is taken from near the Spittal of Glenmuick, the starting point for the main access path to Lochnagar which is just off the photograph to the right. |
