Description: | Oblique aerial view north along Glenshee from Blacklunans, Perthshire. Looking across Dalradian rocks towards the glaciated granite plateau of the Cairngorms. Progressively older Dalradian rocks are enountered as Glenshee is traversed to the north. The immediate foreground is underlain by calcareous and amphibolitic rocks which explains the increased fertility of the area. Schistose psammite and semipelite of the Mount Blair Formation occupy the ground to the north of this as far as Dalnaglar Castle (the prominent white building in the distance) where they give way to the schistose to gneissose semipelites of the Ben Lui Schist Formation. The pale grey screes of Creag Leacach (right background) are composed of quartzite at the base of the Argyll Group. The snow-covered Cairngorm plateau, carved in late Silurian granite is just visible in the background. Bedrock on the lower slopes of Glenshee is largely blanketed by till, although the valley floor is blanketed by glaciofluvial sand and gravel and alluvium. |
