Description: | Loch Tarff, Fort Augustus. View looking south-west across Loch Tarff to Borlum Hill on the south-east flank of the Great glen above Fort Augustus. Most of the bedrock within this view comprises metasedimentary rocks of theTarff Banded Formation. This formation is assigned the Precambrian age (c. 900 million years old) Grampian Group (Moine), within the Central Highland block of the Scottish Caledonides. These metasedimentary rocks have been subjected to two tectonometamorphic events during the Knoydartian (c. 800-850 million years ago) and Caledonian (c.470-450 million years ago) at levels of c. 20km in the earth's crust. The landforms seen here reflect the effects of the Main Late Devensian glaciation (18000 years before present), and the structural control of bedrock during this glacial event. Loch Tarff occupies an area of moundy glaciofluvial deposits, and is one of the few Highland lochs to contain Arctic Char. |
