| Description: | Devil's Study, coast section looking north-north-east, between Old Castle and Whinnyfold. An excellent example of a F1 recumbent fold in dominantly inverted Upper Dalradian gritty and pelitic greywackes. F1 recumbent fold in gritty to pelitic metagreywackes of the Collieston Group (Southern Highland Group). The beds young downwards and the folds seen here face eastwards. The corresponding fold hinge which makes up an F1 fold pair is poorly developed in cordierite-bearing pelites near low-water mark to the east (not seen in the photograph). The grassy cliffs behind are composed of red-brown clay. The Grampian Highlands are mostly made up of metamorphic and igneous rock, part of the eroded root zone of the Caledonian mountain belt. The area has undergone many phases of deformation and folding. The terminology 'F1' fold refers to the first of a series of phases of folding each with their own characteristics and it is related to the phases of deformation. |
