Description: Salisbury Craigs Sill, Holyrood Park, Edinburgh, Midlothian, looking north. The spectacular Salisbury Craigs is a thick sill of teschenite (analcite olivine dolerite), extending for almost 1 km. in Holyrood Park. The sill dips eastwards and is intruded into shales, cementstones and sandstones of the Ballagan Formation, Inverclyde Group, which can be seen in the line of old quarries along the face under the sill. Salisbury Craigs is also a classic example of an escarpment, formed by gently-dipping hard units (the sill) interbedded with softer rocks (the enclosing sediments).
