Caption: Salisbury Craigs Sill, Holyrood Park, Edinburgh, Midlothian.
Description: Salisbury Craigs Sill, Holyrood Park, Edinburgh, Midlothian. This thick sill of teschenite (analcite olivine dolerite), extending for almost 1 km., forms the spectacular Salisbury Craigs in Holyrood Park. It has columnar jointing in places with fine-grained margins and is thought to be later than the Arthur's Seat volcanicity. The sill dips eastwards and is intruded into shales, cementstones and sandstones of the Ballagan Formation, Inverclyde Group, which underlie the lava pile. Looking eastwards, seen here from Calton Hill.
