| Description: | Spectacular columnar jointing of Samson's Ribs, Arthur's Seat, Holyrood Park, Edinburgh, Midlothian. This is a strikingly columnar intrusion of Dunsapie-type olivine basalt within the south-western margin of the Arthur's Seat vent. It is believed to have formed a feeder channel to adjacent lava flows within the vent. Erosion since Carboniferous times has stripped off the rocks surrounding the volcano and revealed these intrusions within the vent. The columns commonly seen in sheet-like basaltic intrusions and lavas develop from cooling joints arranged in a roughly hexagonal pattern on the cooling surface of the body. As the body cools, these joints propagate through the thickness of the body, perpendicular to this surface, to give the columnar effect. |
