Description: | Lava flows and sill intrusions, Arthur's Seat, Holyrood Park, Edinburgh, Midlothian. The Lion's Head vent intrusion, with a plug of Dalmeny-type basalt (numerous small phenocrysts of olivine, fewer augites and occasional labradorite plagioclase) is the pointed hill on the skyline. Long Row, on the left, is a lava flow (No. 1). The Dasses, the small rocky ridge to the right of the footpath, is a sill of Dunsapie-type basalt (macroporphyritic, with phenocrysts of plagioclase, augite and olivine). |
