Description: | Conglomerate clast survey, Rosneath Point, 275 m. at 225 degrees from Green Island, Dumbartonshire. The proportions of different rock types, clast size and the ratio of clasts to matrix in a conglomerate are facilitated by the use of a lightweight grid, 1 metre square with intervals of 10 cm. The percentage composition of rock types in very coarse conglomerates can be verified by point counting. Conglomerates can be very useful in the determination of the composition of their source area since they, by definition, contain large clasts. These are more likely to preserve accurate evidence of their provenance rock type than where the eroded sediment has been reduced to sand grade or smaller. |
