Description: Near Port of Menteith, looking south-west, Central Region. Terminal moraine. The photograph shows the terminal moraine associated with the ice front of the Loch Lomond Readvance in the area between Aberfoyle and Kippen. Carse clay, of the main postglacial raised beach, occupies the flat area in the foreground. For long periods during the last 100,000+ years, ice sheets have covered large parts of the Northern Hemisphere. The last major glacial period, the Dimlington Stadial, lasted from c. 26,000 to 13,000 years ago, with glaciation at a maximum c. 18,000 years ago. After the main ice sheet ice retreated, there was a relatively mild period of c. 2,000 years (the Windermere Interstadial) before the climate became Arctic again. There followed a glacial period of c. 1,000 years (the Loch Lomond Stadial) when local ice caps developed again in the highlands and glaciers advanced part way into the lowlands. From c. 10,000 years onwards, the climate rapidly ameliorated again and the ice retreated for the last time.
