| Description: | Kalnakill, coast of Applecross, Ross & Cromarty. Looking south. A high raised beach. Fringing the modern cobble beach can be seen the partly grassed-over storm beach. The raised beach forms a distinctive level platform visible into the far distance. The eustatic lowering of the sea level caused by the abstraction of water to form the great continental ice sheets was more than offset by the isostatic depression of the land by the weight of the ice-caps. In late- and post-glacial times isostatic recovery failed to keep pace with eustatic rise in sea level as the water was returned to the oceans. Consequently raised beaches such as the one in the photograph are now left well above Ordnance Datum, the present sea level. |
